Wildlife Expedition in South Africa

Travel to a private Big Five game reserve in South Africa and volunteer alongside an international team assisting in vital conservation work. Learn to track animals through the bushveld, study their behavior and get acquainted with charismatic game species such as lions, leopards, elephants and rhinos.

Internship details

Work placements are typically with local conservation organisations, game reserves, and lodges in South Africa's Bushveld region. Specific positions range across many fields; some examples include terrestrial and wildlife conservation, reserve management, Eco-tourism, and wildlife research. Your work placement could be at one of the wildlife rehabilitation centers or on the our base as a member of the field staff.

Soft skills and other requirements

No skills are required for this expedition. All training will be provided to all those taking part in the program. Training includes learning how to use the equipment that is used to track animals on game drives, identifying different animals and their behavior.

Facilities will be more basic than you are accustomed to – please travel with an open mind and a willingness to adapt to local conditions. Accommodation is in shared (mixed sex) rooms with shared bathroom facilities at both bases. There is cold running water available for showers. Flush toilet facilities are available, and participants share base duties, including cleaning and other chores. If you are joining our long term internship, accommodation during work placements will vary depending on location. Accommodation will not be provided on breaks between program phases, you will be responsible for making your own arrangements. Participants take it in turns to prepare meals for the group. Food is very basic with about two thirds of the meals vegetarian. Breakfast could be cereal, fresh fruit, rusks etc., lunch is typically sandwiches, salads and a typical evening meal may include rice, fresh veg, etc.

Social life

There will be free time where you can socialize with other volunteers, read up on the different species the reserve has, catch up on sleep and play games. It is recommended to bring preferred games along.

Side trips in your free time include a visit to Khamai Reptile Park, the local community or the surrounding attractions that include the Kruger National Park, Panoramic route, the Blyde River canyon and Pilgrims rest.
